Micro-Suction Ear Wax Removal
What is micro-suction ear wax removal?
Micro-suction is a safe and highly effective method for removing ear wax blockages. The treatment uses a low-pressure machine with a suction tube to gently remove excess ear wax, debris, and infection from the ear. This method does not require water, as the fine tube and suction are used to remove the wax. During the procedure, we use microscopic visibility to view the ear canal, which allows us to avoid touching the sensitive eardrum or ear canal. Most patients find this method comfortable and painless.
Micro-suction is suitable for everyone but is recommended for those who have experienced a perforated eardrum, previous ear surgery or have suffered an ear infection within the last 6 weeks. Ear wax softening drops are not always necessary before the procedure but are still deemed best practice and recommended by the NICE guidelines. The process is usually straightforward, fairly quick and the wax removed cleanly within minutes.
Microsuction ear wax removal procedure:
During your micro-suction appointment, the clinician will start by asking you a few questions about your ear health. We want to know about any general ear problems, whether you have ever had a perforated eardrum, and any previous experience with the micro-suction procedure. This helps us ensure that micro-suction is right for you.
Next, the clinician will examine your ears with an Otoscope to confirm if there is earwax present. The procedure will then be fully explained to you in detail so that you understand what will happen and have an opportunity to ask any questions you would like.
A small plastic cone (Specula) will be inserted partially into your ear canal and magnification loupes are worn by the clinician to get a clear view of your ear wax, ear canal, and eardrum. We will then use a low-pressure suction medical machine with a fine sterile tube attached to carefully remove the ear wax. Once the earwax is removed, we will check the ear canal again to ensure it is clear, healthy and all anatomical features of the eardrum and ear canals are there as expected.
